Dear All, This Sunday, we are thrilled to premiere a newly commissioned motet for Pentecost by our Composer in Residence, Santiago Gutiérrez. Centered on the mystery of the Holy Spirit, the commission reflects something deeply important to us at Music at Co-Cath: the belief that new sacred music is more relevant today than ever and can provide necessary spaces of contemplation, understanding, connection, and transcendence within contemporary life. For thinkers such as Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, and Bonaventure, beauty was never merely decorative. Beauty, truth, and goodness — the transcendentals — were understood as different expressions of a deeper underlying reality. Beauty, as encountered through art or music, mattered because it could momentarily reorganize perception and allow us to sense our participation in the great mystery: the oneness of all there is and has ever been. Today, contemporary philosophy and science increasingly return to questions of interconnectedness through very different languages. Quantum physics suggests that what we experience as the material world arises from deeper, unitary fields underlying reality itself. Philosophers such as Bernardo Kastrup similarly argue that what we call the physical universe is “Mind at Large” — the undissociated expanse of a universal Consciousness — while individual perspectives are dissociated expressions of that same whole, distinct yet never truly separate from it. While these ideas belong to different intellectual traditions, it is striking how contemporary thought increasingly approaches concepts long embedded within the Christian understanding of the Holy Spirit: many expressions, many forms, many voices, yet one Spirit moving through all of them. For us, commissioning new music is one way of creating a bridge between our spiritual tradition and contemporary culture, allowing sound, community, and reflection to illuminate what it means to be human: distinct individuals, yet profoundly connected within a shared reality larger than ourselves. We are thrilled to share this premiere with you in the context of this coming Sunday’s Pentecost celebration on May 24th.
